Another Threshold
Jakob Solgren Nordenskiöld was born in 1976 in Shiraz, Iran and grew up in Vimmerby, Småland, Sweden. He holds an MFA from Konstfack Stockholm and is currently a senior associate professor in ceramics and glass at Konstfack Stockholm. Another Threshold is Jakob's second solo exhibition at Saskia Neuman Gallery.
The exhibition Another Threshold charters a direct and unaltered perception of existentialism. The artist uses each object as part of a narrative. A constant reminder of a place, voice, poem or memory. Jakob Solgren Nordenskiöld's practice incorporates sculpture, installation and drawing. He describes his work as a constant presence and awareness for inarticulate matter, where objects, sculptures and space engage in a silent, yet charged search for what human life is.
The materials are raw, in an unaltered state. There is no concealing or embellishing. Each object carries a story where the artist's creations are based on a sense of permission and openness. A constant awareness of an unspoken language. The artist describes it as a silence of fragments and syllables between him and the object. As time passes, several days, weeks and months, a sound and a voice starts to seep through the barriers of reality. The position and state of the object is changed. Its agency interpositions itself in a new setting. It is performative; a visual language without limitations and boundaries.
The work Another Threshold, 2024 is placed in the exhibition as a suggestion, or maybe a warning, a exclamation point. Solgren Nordenskiöld describes the emergence of the sculpture as something that chose him, but without consent. Its self-evident manifestation as an artwork was suddenly undeniable. The object reflects an act of caring and protection. Balancing on the delicate tip, dancing.
